2026 awardees

On 4 August 2026, as the Cook Islands marked its 61st Constitution Day, the inaugural Te Tango Raumaire o Avaiki Awards were presented at the Cook Islands National Auditorium.

 

This historic occasion marked the first time Cook Islanders were formally honoured through a national awards system created by our nation and grounded in our language, culture and values.

We proudly recognise the inaugural recipients whose exceptional service, leadership and achievements have strengthened the Cook Islands and enriched the lives of our people.

Awarded for commendable leadership during the all-of-government Cook Islands COVID-19 response.

The Leadership Mace was conferred at the Prime Minister’s discretion, separately from the National Awards Selection Committee process.

The Cook Islands National Awards System is the formal national framework established to recognise exceptional service, achievements and contributions of Cook Islanders who have distinguished themselves in service to our people, our country and our shared future. 

 

The Act establishes:

• An awards system that reflects our unique cultural values
• A National Awards Selection Committee to oversee nominations and recommend awards to Cabinet
• Clear categories of awards
• A process for awards to be conferred by the Prime Minister acting on the advice of Cabinet 

The system complements the New Zealand Royal Honours system within the Cook Islands context.

This relaunch signals the continuation of a national tradition of recognition grounded in merit, transparency and fairness 

Who can be nominated

Nominations are open to Cook Islanders from all walks of life, including:
  • Community and cultural leaders

  • Educators and health professionals

  • Artists, athletes, and creatives

  • Private sector and business leaders

  • Traditional leaders and civil society

  • Cook Islands diaspora

If someone has made a meaningful impact, they deserve to be recognised.
