The Office of the Prime Minister is pleased to announce that nominations are now open for Te Tango Raumaire o Avaiki: The Cook Islands National Awards.
This historic awards system, launched earlier this year, provides a uniquely Cook Islands way of recognising service, leadership, peu Māori, innovation, bravery, and achievement. It celebrates Cook Islanders who uplift our people and nation through their example.
Prime Minister Mark Brown said the awards are an opportunity for all Cook Islanders to take part in celebrating excellence.
“These awards are about honouring those among us who inspire, serve and lead in our homes, villages, islands, and across the world. By nominating someone, you help us shine a light on the stories and values we want to see flourish in our Cook Islands society.”
Nominations are open for the following categories:
- Tui / Tapairu o te Mira Nui o Avaiki – the highest honour, awarded once every six years for once-in-a-generation contributions of national and historical significance.
- Akatauira o te Mira Nui o Avaiki – for exceptional service, leadership, and innovation of national importance.
- Pūtokotoko o te Mira Nui o Avaiki – for commendable service and leadership across any field.
- Rei Ārangatū o Avaiki – for outstanding contribution to the Public Service.
- Ētū Matariki o Avaiki – the Star of Excellence, awarded across four fields: Social Impact & Sports; Arts, Culture & Humanities; Business, Science & Innovation; and Environment & Conservation.
- Reinga Toa o Avaiki – the Seal of Distinction for acts of absolute heroism, bravery, or gallantry.
- Taiki Pāeru o Te-Atukura – the Prime Minister’s discretionary award for extraordinary achievements not otherwise covered.
Nominations open today, Wednesday 24 September, and close at 4.00pm on Wednesday 15 October 2025.
Anyone can put forward a nomination, whether an individual, organisation, or community group. But you cannot nominate yourself. Nominees must be Cook Islands residents aged 18 or older, except in special cases such as bravery awards.
