As we officially enter the 2026/2027 Tropical Cyclone Season, Emergency Management Cook Islands of the Office of the Prime Minister would like to remind all government agencies, staff and their families of the importance of being prepared for potential emergencies across Rarotonga and the Pa Enua.
We encourage all government staff to take the time to review their household and workplace emergency arrangements, prepare essential supplies, and remain informed through official weather warnings and EMCI advisories, and to encourage their wider families and communities to do the same.
In addition to cyclone preparedness, we also encourage everyone to remain mindful of drought preparedness and water conservation, particularly as we approach the warmer months and the potential for prolonged dry conditions in the Southern Group heightened by the current Strong El Niño season.

- Stay informed via the Met Service and EMCI.
During a cyclone
- Stay indoors in a sturdy area, away from windows and glass.
- Avoid the coast, rivers and floodwaters.
- Do not travel unless advised by authorities.
- Follow official instructions from the Met Service and EMCI.
After a cyclone

- Be aware of hazards such as downed power lines and damaged buildings.
- Check on others, especially vulnerable people, if it is safe to do so.
- Report damage to your local authority or EMCI.
Drought and water
