Prime Minister Mark Brown delivered a heartfelt and inspiring address to mark the beginning of a historic year for the Cook Islands. Speaking at the vibrant Ipukarea Concert, he set the tone for 2025, a year of celebration and reflection on 60 years of self-governance under the unifying theme:
“I know who I am, I have a homeland – Kua kite au i toku turanga, e avaiki toku.”
“This theme is not just a slogan,” the Prime Minister declared. “It is a declaration of pride, unity, and purpose, reminding us to stand firm in our identity as Cook Islanders and to embrace the strength that comes from knowing where we belong.”
In his speech, the Prime Minister reflected on the bold choice made by the Cook Islands in 1965 to embrace self-governance, highlighting milestones that affirm the nation’s autonomy and global standing. From historical milestones like the Joint Centenary Declaration to present-day accomplishments, he called on Cook Islanders everywhere to reflect on their shared heritage and look to the future with pride and determination.
The Prime Minister also unveiled plans for the yearlong celebrations, which include:
- Te Ipukarea concert: A grand cultural showcase of music and dance.
- Te Maeva Nui constitution celebrations: A mid-year commemoration of self-governance and visionary leadership.
- Takurua Food Festival and Emo Aito Māori games: Unique events blending tradition with modernity, fostering community spirit through food, sport, and innovation.
- Legacy projects: Initiatives that preserve and share the nation’s history through programs, publications, and cultural projects.
Addressing Cook Islanders abroad, the Prime Minister emphasised, “Though oceans may divide us, our shared identity and collective spirit unite us in ways beyond measure.” He encouraged all Cook Islanders to reconnect with their heritage, learn the language, and celebrate the values that define their unique identity.
The year 2025 is set to be a transformative journey for the Cook Islands, uniting its people and celebrating the strength of their shared identity.
